Chimneys from the early part of the 20th century are typically constructed of bricks or masonry or flue tiles toward the 1950’s and these bricks or other construction materials are joined with mortar. Unfortunately as time goes by, the mortar deteriorates and leaves gaps which expose the wood structure inside the walls. When fires are burned, the heat can then escape into the chimney walls, heat up the wood and start a fire.
In addition, Long Beach is prone to earthquakes. The most memorable earthquake was the 1933 Long Beach earthquake which caused wide spread damage to Seal Beach, Long Beach and surrounding areas. The earthquake occurred on the Newport-Inglewood Fault line.
Minor earthquakes continue to occur regularly in Long Beach as well as all of Southern California.
It is important that anyone with a home with a fireplace in Long Beach, and any other area prone to earthquakes, get their chimney’s inspected regularly for cracks and voids that can be a fire hazard. The only effective way to inspect most of these chimneys is with a video camera. It is impossible to spot all cracks and gaps by looking down the chimney.
We have found that at least 50% of fireplaces and chimneys that we have inspected in Long Beach have some non-optimum conditions which need to be repaired – minor cracks which could become major ones if left un-repaired, cracks in the flue which can be a fire hazard, lack of a spark arrestor/cap on the top of the chimney which can result in embers causing a fire to your home or your neighbors. Even if you are not burning wood, we always recommend a spark arrestor cap as it will help prevent water damage to the chimney as well as keeping out birds, bees and rodents.

Here are a few examples of some of the properties we have inspected and/or repaired.
A home built in 1948 on Claremont Avenue in Long Beach It had a crown (cement portion at top of chimney) that was cracked and minor cracking on outside of chimney which were not hazardous.
A 1920’s home on Wisconsin Avenue in Long Beach which had 2 chimneys. It needed minor brick repair at the top and had small cracks above the roof line.
The damper on one chimney was hanging loose and there was no spark arrestor. The second chimney was unlined but mortar was in good condition. Damper on this chimney was severely rusted.
